Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has announced his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) citing the party’s leadership crisis and his inability to withstand internal conflicts.
In a viral video, Eno revealed that he lacks the strength of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike, who is known for confronting anyone who wrongs him within the party.
The governor has consistently praised President Bola Tinubu’s administration despite being a member of the opposition party. However, he stated that he can no longer continue to support the President while being a member of the PDP, as it would be considered an anti-party activity.
“I don’t have the kind of strength Wike has who will confront anybody,” Eno said. “I’m a very simple man by nature, I just say it the way I’m convinced to say, but that doesn’t mean that I have nothing against our party.”
Eno also cited the PDP’s internal conflicts and the risk of losing his re-election at the courts due to the party’s leadership crisis as reasons for his decision to defect.
“As a PDP person, I love the PDP and want to stay, but clearly, I don’t have a road map that I would be guaranteed a smooth sail in the elections,” he said.
The governor’s decision to leave the PDP is expected to boost the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
